The work that we, or any other nonprofit organization, perform is a very good reason for you to be motivated to open your wallet and help. But let’s be real. That’s not the only reason.

Managing taxes is, or least should be, very high on your list of things needed to effectively manage your money. For the most part, your money is your business, and we don’t want anything to do with your business, unless you ask us for support and you’re a Gold Star Family.  No one has volunteered for the Gold Star Ride Foundation who is a CPA or tax professional. No one here will do your taxes for you, or help you decide where to diversify your investments.

However, we are all OK with the idea of repeating what we’ve heard. And what we’ve heard from Kiplinger’s magazine is that using a charity is a great way to help manage your tax picture.  For example, it is reported that if you purchase a stock (more than a year ago) and that stock has made significant gains, you may donate the entire investment and deduct from your taxes the entire value of the stock - without paying any capital gains taxes on that stock's growth.  We won’t have to pay them either, so don’t worry about that. Just know that we are able to accept your investments as legitimate donations to our cause.

What a great way to avoid a heavy capital gains tax!  And please remember, we don’t make the rules, we just pass on the rules so you know what they are as well.

Another tax situation mentioned by the magazine, which we understand to be accurate, is that the IRS does not allow tax deductions for 529 accounts, although many states do. Most of the money donated to The Gold Star Ride Foundation is actually given to families to use for education. That is, the very same thing a 529 account is designed to do. Of course, there is a difference: we give education grants to Gold Star Families, not your nephew. However, if your nephew is a Gold Star Family member, he may be eligible to receive a grant from us.

Of course, you may also make cash donations anytime you wish right here. Kiplinger’s, however, also suggests making monthly or quarterly donations, for a couple reasons: First, making regular donations helps us reduce our fund raising expenses, and helps us plan for events and make our grants to our applicants. Second, it helps you plan for your own fiduciary models.

That very same magazine also suggests that the heaviest gift giving time is near the end of the year. Gee, that’s the next two months.

So, have a conversation with your own tax professional and do what makes the most sense to you.
